The Saba Kaido (Mackerel Road) was a historic trade route that transported salted mackerel and tilefish from Wakasa, the ancient imperial food province, to the capital of Kyoto.

"Go! SABA-KAIDO" is a project dedicated to preserving and promoting the 1,000-year-old Saba Kaido culture for another millennium, sharing its rich heritage with modern audiences.

The Saba Kaido consisted of five main routes. The easternmost route, called Tankai-ji, crossed Lake Biwa by boat. The westernmost route, known as Shuzan Kaido, wound through mountain passes including Miyama. The central route, Wakasa Kaido, has been designated as Japan's first officially recognized Japan Heritage site.

Established in 2019, the "Saba Kaido Day! Project Office" designated the second Sunday of March as Saba Kaido Day, hosting various events to celebrate and share the appeal of this historic route. Show your support by wearing "GO! SABA-KAIDO" gear!
